It occurred to me today that this is going to be an expensive hobby at first. So, I started a wish-list of everything I want/need by race day. The list is, in no particular order, as follows:
1. A few wicking tank tops and a few new pairs of shorts
2. More sports bras
3. Running Socks
4. An arm-band for my iPod
5. New headphones that don't fall out of my ears when running. (Seriously Apple...who designed the standard ear buds? You fail, Steve Jobs.)
6. Registration for the race
7. Registration for The Runner's Edge training classes.
That's all for now. I'm sure the list will get longer as I start running farther. Whoever said running is free is a liar. LIAR.

If you would just add "lefsa" to the wish list, I think Gram might get the hint!! (-:
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!

Aftering training for tris on a grad student budget my response to your wish list...
ReplyDelete1) I hate sweating at all costs so wear as little clothing as possible...
2) Do laundry more often
3) Yes, I really like SmartWools for everything, but in the event that you are super poor, gold toe does it for me most of the time, they are even good when put on wet feet like after swimming.
4) I got one and hate it, seriously hate it, you can't easily skip or see timing from it anymore, I used to just carry it in my hand because sometimes I like to hear my power song over and over, and like to be able to use the little timing thing at the bottom to do like 30 seconds of fartlek and seeing the timing thing is important. I also started training last year without music after about 8 weeks into my program since you can't have ANY ipod-esque things as tris, it took me a long time to get used to it but I actually realy like it now and almost never use music, you can see what's going on around you better and it's more peacful, and I feel stronger that I can set my rate without the song doing it...one thing that helps if you ever run without music, have a few phrases that you can repeat to yourself to make a beat for when you need one, my tri mentor suggested "I am capable of more than i think i am" as a good motto for race day, it's great when you want to quit, I am capable of more than i think I am, and it's SOO true! Try this...(and dude tell me to shut up if you're over my encouragement anytime) next time you do your gym class, in the 2nd set of plant do full plank and repeat your encouragement phrase during it, I bet you'll be able to hold full plank for the whole set, don't allow yourself to quit, then go back to modified for the third set and work up to doing them all full plank. You'll be so proud and it'll translate into better run days too.
5) See comment 4...
6) DO IT! Register, sometimes fear trainign is a good extra push to go out on a day you don't want to, once you've registered you can't back out!
7) I was too poor for classes last year but I can't wait for next season since I'll have a real job and can do these things, do it, they're a graet way to meet some new fun fit friends too and maybe have a running buddy!
So proud of you for making it this far, the rest is the easy part, the first steps are the worst. And...damn I had a thought and lost it.....umm....well another thought, when I visit we can run together =) or do the M =) (I run a 10min mile, 9.45 on a great day, 12 on a bad day, I'm slow and always happy to be slower if you're worried i'm good at running forget it). Oh the tired thing he said, I totally disagree! I had so much more energy when I was really training hard than I ever did before. I think because I slept better and my body was just so much more efficient, I felt great! Seriously, find that part out for yourself, I doubt you'll feel that way, you will go to bed and sleep like a baby but you won't be falling aslep at your desk I dno't think, I certainly never did when I was training...yes when I was being lazy though!
Have a good weekend run!
Susan you crack me up! I will definitely use your phrase when I have to do plank tomorrow night. Also I'm doing your shin exercises! I'm really glad you've done this already because you give really good advice! (So please DON'T shut up, in other words!)
ReplyDeleteAnd just because I'm running doesn't mean I've changed my stance on the M. You know how I feel about that damn thing. =)
SO excited for you to come! (The girls are too!)
If it makes you feel better, I can't wear any of those ear bud headphone thingies when I run, not even the "sport" ones, because they won't wrap around and fit into my apparently freakish ears. Unless I'm wearing a winter hat, which holds them in, I'm doomed to music-less runs for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteAlso, not that you want to add anything to your wish list, but I got a super awesome Garmin Forerunner GPS watch for Christmas, and it tracks your distance, pace, route and all these other nifty things. The only drawback is that it's so huge it looks like I'm trying to find the spaceship to beam me up. Still pretty cool though.
Anyway, keep it up, Em! You're doing awesome!
